Nope. It’s an advantage to have a degree and area of training or expertise, but not required. You do need to be at least 21 years of age at the start of service.

Raising (financial) support is part of the challenge before you come to Prague, but you don’t have to do that alone. You will have to ask your home church to commission you to come to Prague. And the organization that you apply with will help you to build a network of supporters.

Participants begin their year in August. The application process needs to be completed about 6 months before arrival, to allow time for you to attain the necessary training and funds.

The Learning Community is one-year-long (technically only 11 months of which 3-4 weeks are introduction). Each year we start in August and end in June.

The grand total depends on a lot of factors like how much rent costs, how much food you eat, what kind of wheels you’ll use to get around and how you get to Prague. Once you’re accepted into the program, we’ll work with you to develop a reasonable budget and a plan for landing financial partners.

We’ll do our best to work with you to find you an affordable apartment near where you’ll serve and get connected.

It is a little easier to describe a normal week than a typical day, as each MOSTY Intern will have a different looking schedule, but here goes. In August you will be in orientation with the rest of the MOSTY Interns. That includes language learning, culture, life, as well as beginning to get connected with the ministry that you will be involved in. Each intern will have a local church that they will be assigned to. Your involvement there will be in support of an existing ministry area or by helping to develop a new ministry area. That committed involvement will be 8-12 hours in a week. You will also participate at a Relational Ministry location each week. This will be something that we develop together where your interests and skills intersect with life outside the church. It could be sports, art, or be volunteer based in some other capacity - this is to help you engage in the culture and meet new people, build relationships, and share in life outside of the church. On your free evenings and weekends, we hope you’ll get more involved in your local church, participate in community life, get to know the city, and build relationships.

Life in Prague will be different than life in the city or town you are from – that’s for sure. Even though living in a sprawling city in another country is challenging, most participants find they enjoy it (eventually). We also do what we can to give you resources and skills while you’re here. Eventually, your experience may even become a resource to future Learning Community participants as they arrive.

Family and friends can come after you’ve had time to settle in (usually after five or six months). But don’t forget that you’re not here to be their tour guide!

Generally, participants don’t make any trips home during their time here. Obviously, life happens, and if you need to get home for a family emergency, we’ll work with you to get you where you need to be.

This is part of the application and placement procedure. MOSTY is developing partner ministries to serve with, and we will try to place you according to your gifting and talents and in a ministry area of your choice (Church Planting, Youth Ministry, College Student Ministry,

Arts, Sports, Marginalized Social Groups, etc.). MOSTY participants will be spread over several churches and missional communities. Getting to the place of seeing a good fit for you is an important part of the pre-field process and in the orientation.

No worries. If you weren’t born and raised here, you probably wouldn’t. During the first four weeks of orientation, you will learn some basic language for survival to order meals and find your way around the city. Meeting up with others for a “language share” after that can be a great way to continue learning and to get to know others.

The language aspect of Orientation will look different for Czech speakers. You will take an entrance exam at the language school to determine your level and begin there. You’ll still have the opportunity to study Czech for your first two months.

During the orientation month, much of your focus will be learning Czech. With three hours a day of class, homework and practicing around town, you’ll get a lot of Czech time in! If you study hard, you may just find yourself dreaming in a foreign tongue! During the rest of your time in Prague, you won’t have formal classes, but we hope that you will still be applying and improving your language skills.

Prague has an excellent public transport system, including bus, tram and metro. Long-term tickets allow you to travel anywhere in the city for less than half a dollar. Busses and trains towards the many castles and forests are also affordable. The best way is to make Czech friends and they will be happy to take you on a weekend day-trip.

Well, you will be living in Prague. You don’t have to like it (we encourage you to try it), but realize that this is part of the culture.

Most participants live with roommates —sometimes those roommates are Czech, sometimes they are from other countries, sometimes they are fellow Learning Community participants.

We haven’t done that yet—but it’s not a bad idea.

It depends. The program size can vary from four to seven participants, but we don’t have a minimum or maximum number.

Ideally, you will train with the rest of the Learning Community, both in the US/EU (via Skype) and in Prague. While you’re here, you’ll have track days and monthly coaching sessions. You will also have training geared specifically to your service opportunity. We see the entire year as a time for both service and learning—so that you are ready for whatever leadership your future holds.

Well, after the first month of introductions: not as often. You will live and serve out of your Czech community. Yet you will have coaching on a bi-weekly basis and gather with the other participants as well to reflect and learn. In autumn and spring there will be retreats to spend some more time together to process all your experiences. Part of the value of the Learning Community is that you get to learn from each other as each of you works in different contexts. If you are looking for an experience where you are part of a community of ministry interns all working together, MOSTY doesn’t look like that.
